fake empire

february first should be a more important day in our lives. i don't say this selfishly (because it is finally my birthday month) but february 1 has always marked the beginning of the end of the winter to me. we have survived november and december, and january--which somehow always seems like the longest month--is over as well. the 28 days of february will be over before we realize, and then march! even though march weather in new york barely differs from christmas time, it at least sounds closer to spring. just keep hanging in there...

I have a painting class in 2 hours and i'm supposed to be finding images to paint. it should be easy because i have literally hundreds of photos on my computer, both that i've taken and dragged from blogs, but i am so indecisive. something that makes a great photo doesn't necessarily make a good painting. but needless to say, this is giving me an opportunity to revisit all the pictures that are hidden in various folders on my computer. here are some that i have resurrected from the depths of technology.

flickr faves #1

with the purchase of a vintage canon ae-1 film camera and the revival of my polaroid, i have joined the flickr world and am hopelessly addicted. i can easily spend hours browsing through photographs and adding them to my steadily growing list of favorites. inspired by one of my favorite blogs "here comes the sun", ive decided to start my own flickr faves fridays where i post the most inspiring images i find that week. i started this yesterday but got distracted, so my first flickr faves friday is going to have to be on a saturday because i really can't hold off another week. i hope you enjoy learning about new flickr stars and seeing my all time favorites!

back to the streets

i'm finally back in new york and surrounded by beautiful things. unfortunately the weather is somewhat hindering any street style spotting as everyone is bundled up or hidden away inside

cat power

my whole life, i have considered myself a dog person. my interest in cats has never surpassed my hello kitty collection. but suddenly this has changed. i dont know how this has happened, but i have developed a deep love for cats. it must have come from my roommate, whose obsession confused me at first. apparently this feline favoritism is contagious, because i now join her in spending most of my time immersed in the world of lolcats and kitten youtube videos. over the semester she has successfully taught me what is so loveable about kitties, and now that im educated, i think i might have to put my dreams of teacup pigs aside and adopt a cat of my own.

it seems as though people across the world are experiencing this same inexplicable sensation. for lack of a better term, it looks like cats are suddenly "in". ive found an influx of cat photos on blogs and flickr, supporting my theory that the animal's qualities that were once seen as stuck up, pretentious, and unfriendly are now more interpreted as independant, non-chalant, and fashionable.

so maybe im just jumping on the bandwagon with this new fad, but i can't help it. its a fact. girls like cute animals, and who can object when they look like this?

preface

(james gallagher)

about a year ago, my art teacher assigned a blogging project. we were meant to create a blog that displayed and explained our artwork from the year, reflecting on the process of each piece. almost everyone resented this assignment and after the school year, deleted or forgot about their blog. however, throughout the summer i kept making little improvements and additions to my blog. it became my personal space to organize my art . i knew no one looked at it, yet still enjoyed arranging and designing the blog. art has always been a part of me, but it extends beyond drawing and painting. i find art in almost anything. consequently, i am often overwhelmed by inspiration. as my closet walls became more and more inundated with photo/newspaper/magazine collages, it was clear that i needed a better way to organize my inspiration. of course- i would blog.

i simply dropped my original art blog to create this multi-faceted picturebook of art, photography, fashion, style, decorating, etc. i read once that in order to have a successful blog, one must choose a specific topic and stick with it in order to develop a strong group of followers with the same interests. oops

i sometimes question how many people read this. i really wouldnt find my ramblings interesting to anyone else, it really is for myself. and brian, of course. everyone always says that writing clears your head and thoughts an, even though i have always considered myself an anti-journal person, i have to say it is true. so i really am just talking to myself i guess. because when do i actually get the chance to sit down and listen to my thoughts? im doing it right now, and i never really realized it

lovely

white houses

perhaps winter is getting to me, but as i look outside at the 13 inches of fresh snow piling up, i cant help but think how perfect it looks with everything evenly coated with an indentical shade of clean white. the sky, the trees, the grass, the cars, the buildings have all evolved into a magical winter-wonderland. unfortunately, as a seasoned northerner i am aware that this will only last for the rest of the day at best and the winter whites will soon become the winter blues. once the snow fall slows, the plow trucks will come along, scraping away the pure white to reveal the dead earth. snow banks on the side of the road will accumulate dirt as pollution overcomes nature. the snow will melt and freeze again, inconveniencing drivers everywhere, and we will all curse mother nature for the relentless cold that lasts until about april. but for now, i can enjoy the dreamy landscape that surrounds me (as long as I stay inside)

luckily an imitation of this bright, cleansed sensation can last throughout the year. i have always been drawn to all white rooms for the same reason i find beauty in snowfall. it always appears so elegant and neat, even if the room is not extremely tidy. somehow it does not feel sterile, but rather cozy and inviting.   i am always amazed at how whites and light colors open up an area and give us a fresh breath. these photos have been accumulating on my computer for quite some time now, and i felt the need to share these calming atmospheres now that the holidays are over and a murmer of winter resentment is beginning to grow

just looking makes me feel more peaceful!
